Springfield is the third-largest city in Massachusetts, located in the Pioneer Valley region along the Connecticut River in the western part of the state. Known as the "City of Firsts," Springfield is the birthplace of basketball (invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891) and home to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The city serves as the economic and cultural hub of Western Massachusetts, with a diverse population and a rich industrial and cultural history.
