Known as the birthplace of basketball, invented by James Naismith at the Springfield YMCA in 1891, the city has a rich industrial history and serves as the urban and economic center of Western Massachusetts. Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy, named after a former Springfield mayor and industrial leader, provides career-focused education to students from Springfield and surrounding communities.
